AL BENDER WAS SITTING in his taxi across the street from the Park Central when something shiny hopped the curb and skidded across Seventh Avenue. Bender retrieved it—a snub-nosed .38 Special. Its two-inch barrel was warm.

Mrs. Marian Putnam of Asheville, North Carolina—“an attractive looking woman,” according to the next day’s newspapers—was waiting for the elevator on the hotel’s third floor when a balding man in a gray suit bumped past her. Mrs. Putnam was offended to see that the man was touching his groin.

Two minutes later, at 11:07 p.m., Arnold Rothstein staggered out of the Park Central’s ground-floor service entrance, his hands pressed to the wound between his legs, leaving a trail of spotted blood on the sidewalk. To no one in particular he said, “I’m shot.”
